The Department of Public Health Dentistry has been committed to promoting dental care through excellencein teaching the art of prevention. The department has been involved in undergraduate training since the inception of college in the year 1991 and postgraduation training in this specialty since the year 2014. Students undergo a complete learning experience that includes interactive learning methods that focus on enhancing the cognitive skills and the empower its application to real life settings. The department is fully equipped to support a wide array of services that include creating community health awareness, conducting school oral health programmes and habit cessation services for promoting a healthy lifestyle among the public.
The department has to its achievements, the direction and making of two movies in associating with the Ministry of Education- ‘Arivu Jeevanadalli Thiruvu’ and ‘Redeem the ashes’, that brought attention to the harmful effects of tobacco on health. The department initiated, contributed, and successfully complied ‘Danta Samhita’ abook on oral health, which is being distributed to government school children across Bengaluru, Tumakuru and Mysuru districts and has also been an active part of oral health care provision and awareness creation initiatives under Sarva Shikshana Abhyaan conducted by the DDPI, Govt of Karnataka. The department, apart from collaborationswith the government, share an active association with the Indian Association of Public Health Dentistry, IndianDental Association Bangalore branch, Lions Club, Rotary Club and other NGOs in conducting programs targetingthe school children and the community at large.
The department also has an Oral Health Education Museum and a Tobacco Cessation Cell containing a plethora of health education materials, models, charts, portraits, and exhibits that explain the normal oral cavity and its various diseased states. We also have a well-equipped, fully functional and state of the art mobile dental unit specially designed to target remote areas and manages four satellite centers with screening and treatment visits for ensuring incorporation of oral health care in the existing health care infrastructure with due consideration to rural exposure to the graduating interns.
The department has immensely promoted the conduct of numerous research studies including experimental and epidemiological studies. The faculty has been constantly encouraging the graduates for publication of the research projects in various national and international journals.
